Google Adwords To Allow New Tablet Targeting Options

Google sent out a mass email to all Adwords clients this morning highlighting some great new targeting options for your Adwords campaigns. In a few weeks, advertisers will be able to specifically target tablet devices. Currently tablets devices can be targeted along with mobile devices such iPhones and Android phones.

Here is a short clip from the email Google sent out:

We are pleased to announce that in the coming weeks we will be launching new targeting functionality in your Google AdWords account. To give you greater control over your ads, we are changing the way you can target tablet devices such as the Apple iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab or the Motorola Xoom. The ‘Tablets with full browsers’ check box will be located on your ‘Settings’ tab under ‘Networks and Devices’ and will enable you to select more precisely which types of devices and operating systems will display your AdWords ads.

So how will this effect account performance?

Adding these additional targeting options can definitely help your account perform better. Tablets are becoming more popular, which is leading to more potential customers making buying decisions on their iPad or rather then their desktop of laptop. If your business model contains large purchases, filling out a form or something else that is not something done on an impulse, only targeting tablets may benefit you.

While previously grouped with smart phones, this could have caused an issue. Searchers on smart phones usually are not looking to buy a TV or fill out a loan application. They are looking for a local mechanic or browsing restaurant reviews. These types of users may not be the target market for an e-commerce store or your specific business.

As for reporting, similar stats and data will be available for your campaigns targeting tablets. You can break down the information by device by using the filter options in Adwords.

Google will always bring things that will help the internet business be clean (without spammers).
    Thanks for the info.

That’s cool, I guess it’s about time they catered specifically for that kind of device! Increased targeting options = more choice for advertisers which can only be a good thing.

@Julie, I couldn’t agree more. More targeting options only benefits the advertiser.

I think a tablet provides a canvas that is more likely to lead to a purchase then a mobile phone. Full search results are seen and I personally would be more comfortable making a purchase on a tablet.

I don’t have a tablet myself but I do agree that people will be more likely to buy than when they browse on their mobiles. It’s just easier to make a purchase with that screen than it is on a comparatively small phone screen. Most of the time mobile browsing is a nightmare!
